Sunny skies, classic rock tunes and a veritable tower of pizza boxes banished the ghosts of a long winter as FSCJ South Campus celebrated its annual Spring Fling on March 11.
Students from across the campus gathered over the course of the two-hour celebration for food and fun at the 1950s-themed event, which included music by performers of the time like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly.
“We wanted to do something fun and something different, so we agreed to do the ’50s theme,” said Student Government Association President Maile Maturell. “Everything is decorated, even the cafeteria on their menu,” she said.
SGA took this time to promote Movie Night, slated for March 27 at the South Campus gymnasium. Students were asked to vote for the movie they would like to see on that evening from a selection of “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Big Hero 6,” “Mockingjay Part 1” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
For organizations like the Microbiology and Cell Science Club, which only opened its doors in October, the Spring Fling also provided an opportunity to spread the word. Sporting whimsical T-shirts (“STOP COPYING ME!”) with squabbling DNA molecules, club president Mary Bishop and her colleagues seized the moment to catch the eye of prospective members. “A lot of the time, people don’t know about our club,” she said. “So this is great because people come up and say, ‘Hey, I didn’t know this was here.'”
Attending students munched pizza and snow cones while gathering information about organizations ranging from the Career Development Center to the Volunteer Club.
Volunteer Club members Travis Wichols and Camila Prieto took to fundraising, selling snow cones for one dollar. The club also took advantage of this time to bring awareness to their seed-planting event taking place this Friday, March 13, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Ecological Garden, and their Spring Basket Drive.
Students wishing to participate in the Basket Drive can bring their donations to the South Campus Student Life office from March 9 to March 27.
Kent Campus and North Campus will celebrate their own Spring Fling events Wednesday, April 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
