Jacksonville Chooses Leaders in Spring Election

Voters across Jacksonville flocked to their polling precincts Tuesday for elections that would help determine the city’s future course. With offices including mayor, sheriff and city council positions all contested, the balloting promised to shape policy on matters ranging from crime to education to economics.

The two highest-profile races, however, will not be settled until a runoff May 19. Incumbent Alvin Brown, a Democrat, will face former state Republican party chairman Lenny Curry in the mayoral election. On the same day, Ken Jefferson and Mike Williams will vie for leadership of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to replace John Rutherford, who is departing due to term limits.

Voter turnout was 33.6 percent, an increase from four years ago.
