FSCJ Joins Heads Up, America! Initiative in Support of the College Promise Campaign
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) joins colleges and communities across the country in the Heads Up, America! public awareness initiative promoting the College Promise Campaign, which supports America’s College Promise proposal to make two years of community college free to qualifying students.
On Wednesday, October 28, 2015, FSCJ campuses are hosting events to engage the FSCJ community and encourage conversations about free community college access and increased public investment in community colleges through federal, state and local dollars.
FSCJ’s student government associations at each campus are hosting open forum booths to invite students, faculty, staff and guests to share their thoughts and opinions on “how would two years of free college impact future generations?” The responses received will be shared on FSCJ’s social media accounts to garner the attention of legislators at the local, state and federal levels to encourage their support in the development of College Promise programs across the country.
“We all have a responsibility to support a long-term solution to the student debt crisis and advance the community college as a pathway to the American Dream,” said FSCJ President Cynthia Bioteau. “I encourage every single person in our community to communicate with our elected officials, business and community leaders and media outlets to share your thoughts on the importance of making community college accessible to anyone who is interested in attending.”
Below are the times and locations for the open forums at each campus:
Downtown Campus, A-Lobby, from 1-2:30 p.m.
101 W. State Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202

Among the qualifications for America’s College Promise proposal, students must maintain a grade-point average of at least 2.5, be enrolled in a qualifying academic or workforce-training program and belong to a household earning less than $200,000 annually.
In addition, the program requires that any participating community college must implement promising and evidence-based reforms to support student success, and that states must ‘pay to play,” contributing approximately one-fourth of the cost of student tuition and fees.
