FSCJ Hosts a Month of Deaf Culture Awareness Events

WHAT:          Would you like to brush up on your American Sign Language? Want to better communicate with deaf students or colleagues? The Sign Language Interpretation Program and Florida State College at Jacksonville’s (FSCJ) Student Engagement
invite you to learn more about Deaf Awareness.

Throughout February, all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in events at the College and engage with deaf culture. Members of the public are also welcome to take part in these free events.

The events kick off at FSCJ North Campus with “Deafology, Part I: Deaf Culture 101.” Interpreters will be available at all events except for the ASL Club “Signing” Lunch. Each event is free and anyone is welcome to attend.

  • Crash course in deaf culture, including cultural considerations, do’s and don’ts, communication tips and more

  • Short American Sign Language (ASL) course will go over common phrases and signs useful in classroom settings

  • Rachelle Settambrino, a deaf faculty member and instructor for FSCJ’s “Orientation to Deafness” course, will facilitate this discussion
